Dr. Gernetzke, affectionately known around our office as “Dr. John,” loves helping people improve their lives by helping them achieve and maintain a beautiful, healthy, and functional mouth. Helping patients keep their teeth throughout their lives and helping them live a pain-free lifestyle has given him great joy in the 24 years he has practiced dentistry. He enjoys being both an artist and a scientist, and especially cherishes helping patients overcome chronic pain and getting back to enjoying life.
Dr. Gernetzke’s profession allows him to help others improve their quality of life, and his experience in caring for children and adults is coupled with genuine concern and care for his patients’ overall health. Dr. Gernetzke, who knew he wanted to be a dentist at the age of 12, embraces all things dentistry. For him, being highly respected by his patients, and their allowing him to help them achieve a world-class smile, is especially humbling. Dr. Gernetzke takes a lot of pride in the fact they share their lives with him, as well as from knowing they appreciate his care. Together, he and our patients build a relationship of mutual concern, trust, and confidence in one another.
Education and continuing education
Dr. Gernetzke earned a Bachelor of Science at Marquette University in 1986, and obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Marquette University School of Dentistry in 1989, graduating as the top student in his class of 114 members.
Since he began practicing, Dr. Gernetzke has witnessed great changes in dental care and made continuing education his priority. He chooses to participate in continuous education because it keeps him excited about his profession and assures him that he is giving our patients the kind of care he would want to receive himself. Dr. Gernetzke is currently taking Invisalign® courses, as well as advanced CEREC® training.

Outside the office
A native of Dodge County, WI, Dr. Gernetzke resides in Evansville with his wife, Mary Ann. They have six children, Chris, Peter, Matt, Anne, Mary, and Catherine. When he’s not perfecting our patients’ smiles, Dr. Gernetzke enjoys spending valuable time with his family, as well as gardening.
In the community
Dr. Gernetzke’s dedication to our community is evidenced by his active participation in civic and church organizations, especially in working with youth. He has been active in several community organizations, including the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, various church activities, and the Jaycees, a leadership training and civic organization for those between the ages of 18 and 40. He currently serves on the Parish Council at St. Paul Catholic Church, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. Since joining our community, he has also served as the Director of Dental Services and as a member of the Quality Assurance Committee at Evansville Manor and Rehabilitation Facility.
